What impact did Freeland's resignation have on political opinions?
The first poll after the bombshell events yesterday in Canadian politics
In the wake of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland’s unexpected resignation, we set out to measure its immediate impact on Canadian public opinion. To do this, we launched a rapid-response survey on December 16 at 5pm ET, just hours after the news broke, and wrapped up fieldwork the following morning at 8:30am ET. We interviewed a nationally representative sample of 1,186 Canadian adults in both official languages, providing us with an excellent snapshot of initial reactions to this significant political development.
What we found is that this event has landed a clear blow to the political fortunes of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the governing Liberal Party. There’s no sugar-coating the results: the Conservatives, who were already enjoying a healthy lead over the Liberals prior to Freeland’s resignation, have now widened the gap to an unprecedented extent in our tracking history.
