With the Liberal leadership contest entering its final weeks, and Canadians looking for a clear economic vision in response to the threats posed by Donald Trump, Mark Carney’s promise to “unleash AI” (my words) in his recently released economic plan may me a risky proposal.

While Carney argues that boosting artificial intelligence across government services and the broader economy will revitalize productivity and innovation, recent polling I’ve conducted suggests that running on a pledge to expand AI could be a politically risky move.

First off, Canadians’ overall views on artificial intelligence have been shifting more negative over time. In my latest survey, more people believe AI will have a negative impact on society than a positive one, and that gap has been growing.
