“I should have known not to bet against David Coletto. Coletto is the CEO of Abacus Data, and in my opinion the best pollster in the country.”
- Ottawa Citizen, Oct 28, 2022

We are currently living in a politically turbulent and unpredictable era, possibly one of the most tumultuous in modern history. The political climate appears more divided than ever as misinformation and a disengaged electorate complicate communications, advocacy and politicaL management fundamentals.

The way we engage, learn, communicate, shop, and make choices is undergoing significant transformations due to generational and technological shifts. It is a thrilling but challenging experience to navigate through a world that seems to be in a constant state of change.

This newsletter is intended to offer you valuable insights to help you navigate this constantly changing environment and make better decisions. It will be a space where I can share data, insights from individuals I admire, and my opinions on public opinion, politics, and public policy.

I have been involved in the political and public opinion landscape for over 16 years and have studied Canadian politics from both an academic and political management standpoint. I also founded, built, and lead Abacus Data, a polling firm that has become one of Canada's most respected and innovative.

My goal is to establish a community of like-minded individuals who share my curiosity and want to understand what drives people's actions and emotions. This includes understanding how Canadians and individuals from around the world think, feel, and behave.

Why should I subscribe?

If you believe that good data is necessary for making better decisions, then you've come to the right place.

Becoming a paid subscriber helps me to fund more polls and go beyond the usual questions to explore the what, why, and how behind Canadian public opinion.

We will run experiments. Test messages and go deeper than ever before as this community grows.

Subscribers to this newsletter include prominent politicians, corporate and union leaders, policymakers, political managers, journalists, academics, and public servants. However, most importantly, they are people who seek thoughtful analysis to complement what they often read in mainstream media and see on Twitter.

About me

I’m the founder, Chair, and CEO of Abacus Data, a full-service marketing and public opinion research with offices in Toronto and Ottawa.

I manage the day-to-day operations and lead Abacus Data’s team of research consultants and strategists, delivering strategic advice and research design expertise to some of Canada’s leading corporations, advocacy groups, and political leaders.

I ask people questions for a living. It’s a pretty awesome job and I’ve been doing it for more than a decade and a half. I’m proud to be an industry leader in online research methodologies, public affairs research, corporate and organizational reputation studies, and youth research.

I’m also an outspoken proponent of transparency in the polling industry and regularly called up by media and organizations to provide expert analyses of public opinion and research methodologies.

I’m currently the pollster for the Toronto Star.

Earning a doctorate from the University of Calgary in 2010, I am an Adjunct Professor at the Arthur Kroeger College of Public Affairs at Carleton University where I teach courses on polling and public opinion, political marketing, research methods, and designing public affairs strategies. I’m also an instructor at the Clayton H. Riddell Graduate Program in Political Management at Carleton University.

When I’m not working, I love to cycle, explore new food adventures, and serve on the Boards of the Ottawa Board of Trade and Ottawa Riverkeeper.

In 2013, the Ottawa Business Journal and Ottawa Chamber of Commerce named him a Forty Under Forty in Ottawa.

And to answer the question a lot of you are asking – I’m 41 years old.

I also host a podcast that is gearing up to begin its next season: inFocus with David Coletto.
